The Sicily Mistake We See Most Often
The instinct is to treat Sicily like a single destination. It isn't. It's closer in size and diversity to a small country, and trying to cover Palermo, Taormina, and the Val di Noto baroque towns in one week usually means arriving somewhere just long enough to feel rushed leaving it.
Sicily rewards depth over checklist. Two nights in Palermo is enough to understand the city without exhausting it. The east coast, Taormina, Catania, and the baroque towns around Noto and Ragusa, deserves its own separate few days, ideally with its own separate base. Day tripping Mount Etna from a hotel near Palermo means giving up nearly a full day to driving in each direction.
The couples who enjoy Sicily most are usually the ones who accepted early they wouldn't see everything, and chose two or three regions to really experience instead of five to glimpse.
